VMDO Architects Presents “Wayland Hall and Sustainable Design“ at James Madison University

While the backhoes dig a rainwater harvesting cistern, the rigs drill a new geothermal well field, and the jackhammers make room for new sustainably harvested materials, VMDO Architects is teaching the James Madison University community about its sustainable design for the renovation of Wayland Residence Hall. David Oakland, one of VMDO’s founding principals, addressed over one hundred members of the James Madison University community with the imperative and opportunities of sustainable building design. In his talk given on the JMU campus, David discussed sustainable design principals in general, JMU’s commitment to sustainability, and then demonstrated how the renovation of Wayland hall embodies these principals. Students and professors alike learned how the building’s rainwater harvesting system, water conservation measures, geothermal heating and cooling, and tight envelope design contribute to astounding water and energy savings. Audience participants learned how these conservation efforts dovetail with innovative landscaping and healthy material selection to position the project on track for LEED Platinum recognition!
